Big River First Nation, also known as Whitefish Lake,
is located 120 kilometers northwest
of Prince Albert, Saskatchewan near the towns of Debden, Big
River and Spiritwood. Big River First Nation has a population of
3,062 membership with 2,120 members currently living on-reserve.
Big River First Nation has a proud reputation as a
traditional Cree community where the majority of youth fluently
speak the Cree language. The Big River First Nation has also strengthened
their families through cultural ceremonies such as sun dances, as
well as by hosting and attending local surrounding pow wows throughout
the years.
With nearly 30,000 acres of reserve land, Big River
has its roots in Treaty no. 6 of 1878. Led by Chief SeSeWaHum and
later by Chief Kinematayo, Big River First Nation members made their
living by hunting and fishing until 20 years after treaty adhesion.
PHILOSOPHY AND PURPOSE

Big River First Nation is committed to the development
of self government and the capacity to manage its own affairs. To
provide membership with essential services the management along
with Chief and Council have taken on the ever increasing number
of programs and work with different funding agencies to better service
the community.

SERVICES AND FACILITIES 
Based on a growing population of over 3,000, the Big
River First Nation has developed on-going
services and community improvements. At present, Big River First Nation has one
elementary and one high school, an employment service/fitness centre,
as well as a Gas Bar and Convenience store. BRFN also has a Health
Centre with dental services and hired a dietician along
with all the services required.
Cree court
has been in place for a number of years and just recently, an RCMP
station has been moved to our First Nation.
Big River First Nation has been active in all sporting
events and therefore have in place indoor
and outdoor sporting facilities for year round activities. A
local radio station, 95.7 fm, is in place to keep the community
informed on any news
and local events, as well as play by play action of our local
Junior and Senior hockey teams.
